Buongiorno from Italia
9:05 am Sun, 10th September 2006Hello from Rome! Actually I’m in a B&B in Palestrina, just outside Rome. Its been great so far. In quick summary we’ve been to Venice, which was just beautiful – its so so different from any other city in the world…. Bologna for some traditional bolognese which was very yummy… the drive from Bologna to Rome was long and difficult.. the italians drive like maniacs (they have their own definition of “drifting” – thats drifting between lanes!!).. but we passed through some very nice scenery, mountains and the hills of tuscany. Rome was grand and huge and very tiring. Very touristy too. We had a whirlwind of a day starting with the Vatican City – St Peters square, Basilica and the pope tombs.. then had lunch at a little local place out in a quiet corner of rome. Then onto the Roman Forum, Colosseum.. then to the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and finally the Spanish Steps. I was totally exhausted by then, and in some pain from all the walking – my feet, stomach and lower back all hurt! We had dinner at a popular local pizzeria ristorante out in the middle of nowhere again – I have this thing for going out of my way to not eat at touristy restuarants where the food is crap and the prices ridiculous. I like to find the places where locals go to eat, and where not much english is spoken.. but the food is bellissimo and the prices cheap!!
So now we head into Tuscany and then Florence and finally Milan. Ciao e arrivedercci.

I say skip florence – like disneyland. Rather wander around milan – verona is also great but I don’t think your route takes you there.
Have a great time! Ciao.

On the contrary, Florence was my absolute favourite city of the lot. And I hated Milan – full of snobs and stuck-up people – too much like london! People were so friendly in florence.. and the city is absolutely beautiful. Not a skyscraper in sight. All the old buildings were so clean and well maintained, but still in that old rennaisance style. The statues were absolutely beautiful. Florence is absolutely beautiful. Prob my fave city in the world now. Definitely the most romantic city in the world – kicks Paris and Venice, which are both over-commercialised.
I’ve been to verona.. its very nice too. Prob my 2nd fave city in Italy thus far.
Oh and I just loved tuscany in general… went to a little town called Saturnia… just awesome… loved it. Definitely gonna head back for a long trip in tuscany.
